Good morning, everyone. [ Smiling at the lot of you. ] My name is Rethe Kyriff-Clayce. I'll be your teacher this year.

[ After a basic round of introductions, he's going to rest of first period to a lecture on firearms safety and breaking typical stereotypes on the use of long ranged weapons (especially guns, since it's his purview). He'll take it slow, so feel free to ask questions. ]

[ This one is standing in your training hall wearing nothing but a hakama, so you can see the Transmutation Circles all over his upper body. He's got a big smile for all of you.

There's a variety of fist weapons, gauntlets, and the like on the floor. ]

They asked me to teach you all how to defend yourself and this isn't a lecture, so I'm going to jump straight into the fun part. You've all only got six months to prove your worth - and today, in particular, you have to earn the right to have a name in my class.

Pick your weapon or don't pick at all, then attack me, one by one. My only rule? Be smart about it.

ESTANISLAO MARASIGAN-FUKUZAWA || Teaching: Weaponry, Special Cases (OTA)

[Today, Taning Marasigan walks into the training room wearing a formal gi and hakama. He has four katana, two on each hip, and his right hand is fiddling with the handle of the topmost sword on the right. Hanging on the walls of the room are all manner of handheld melee weaponry, and you'll also notice that there are life-sized mannequins standing, spaced evenly, all over the room.

When everyone is settled down, he proceeds to blink to three mannequins, slicing them up while using, it seems, all four swords at his hip. (No, he didn't grow two extra arms.) When he's done with that, he casually obliterates the remains with a blinkering, otherworldly fire. He then looks at the three students who were late pointedly, then at the door, then back to each of them. They waste no time bustling out of the room.

Now, with a very chipper voice:]

Hi good morning! I am Estanislao Marasigan, also known as Taning or Stanley or Stan, but you will address me as sir the whole time training is in session. Feel free to call me by my other names outside of class, okay? [A friendly smile.

After explaining the basic rules for class, he goes on to tackle grading.]

My grading rules are simple: every class will have a 50-minute demonstration and practice session, and a 10-minute melee where your only collective objective is hit me. Anyone who does automatically merits a passing grade, with the final grade being the only thing left to be determined. All will be graded according to classroom performance, mastery of the form, mastery of the weapon, and sparring performance. Clear so far? Great! If there are questions, please raise them now; otherwise, pick your weapon, pick a dummy, and start whaling on it. Beware though: it scales to your skill level pretty fast, so careful, okay? Okay!

Then she heads for the desk, sits behind it, sets the few things she has brought with her (your textbook for this class), an ashtray, her cigarettes, and lifts her chin up. ]

She moves around the during the period like a Victorian teacher, Staring Down or verbally lashing out at any funny business in her classroom. In order to ask a question, though, you're going to have to raise your hand.

She's starting with the story of the end of the Fourth World, by the way. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. She gives off the Ice Queen vibe, but from the looks of it, she answers everything politely --

[ This one's got four swords - two at each hip - and he waits for all of you to sit down in front of him before he starts. The wall behind him is lined with melee weapons of all shapes, sizes, origins, and makes. ]

My name is Hikaru Shinta, and I'm your ASC teacher for Weapons Training & Maintenance. Before we start, I've got some ground rules:

3.) Don't piss me off.

Once the bell rings and everyone's settled, he's leaning all the way back in his chair, putting his legs up on the desk, and smiling crookedly at all of you. ]

Hi, guys. I'm not even going to bother introducing myself because I want to turn our first session into general Q&A.

You've got three options. Option One: ask me whatever you want, regardless of whether it has to do with me being a Keeper of the Vigil or not. Option Two: ask me what I know about you or your ancestors, recent or otherwise, in relation to the Vigil. Option Three: ask me whatever you want to know about the Vigil in general.

[ Here's the trick: Alistair's blocked off an entire outdoor range for your use, guys. The big table in the area has guns and other projectile weapons on top of it. The catch? All of these weapons have been disassembled.

His instructions are simple: ]

Pick your weapon, put it together, and spend this period at one of those slots, plugging your target full of holes.

[ Then he quietly spends the period moving around, correcting stances, watching you put together (or fail to put together) your weapon of choice, and watching you shoot.

He might just speak to you if you're well or really badly. Is that a good thing or not? Hard to say. ]

[ You'd think given his experience in Corporate he wouldn't be nervous about teaching a bunch of freshmen. Adults are less forgiving than children, but perhaps that's why he is nervous. This is after all, his first attempt at being a teacher.

He walks in dressed in casual wear: his favorite jeans, Converse sneakers that are less than a year old, a blue shirt that has the name of his Alma Mater printed in small white font. He goes the relaxed route, actually sits on the table and pulls out his phone where he's got his class list and reminds himself that he was in high school once, and that his favorite teachers were the ones who you knew never to cross, but were nevertheless approachable. ]

Okay, I'll lay out the House Rules: [ That's his Listen Up voice. Thank you, football, for giving him the skill to manage over twenty-people. ] First, I'm Joshua LaRue, and I'll be teaching you all about the Vigil for the three terms. I'm okay with you calling me Mr. Larue or Josh, just pick whichever you're comfortable with and stick with it.

Second, your grades are not in my hands -- they're in yours. Work for a high mark, that'll reflect. Think you can snooze through my class, don't come asking me why you didn't make it.

[ When you enter the room, there's a man dressed like he could have stepped out of the Prohibition era reclined in one of the front row seats, and he's going through a folder that appears to hold a printed version of the official class list. On the large holoscreen set up front, there is a video playing on mute, and it appears to be a news broadcast dated December 21, 2012.

Once everyone is seated, the man stands, scans the whole of the class as if to check if anyone is missing, before he pauses the feed. ]

The term "vigil", taken from the Latin vigilia, is a practice of deliberate wakefulness. An officer's stakeout, a birdwatcher's day spent in a particular section of the woods, gatherings dedicated to an entire evening spent in silence and prayer for a cause, a person, an event.

[ He gestures to the screen behind him at that. ]

Most of you would not know the content of this video. I find that regrettable, because under the most ideal of circumstances -- you should. [ A beat, then: ] The impression that history is relegated to books and the past is incorrect. History informs the present: culture, beliefs, interactions, even the language we speak, the association we make as individuals.

As members of ASC, and I am very sure you have heard this at least once today, you have all taken on the responsibility of pursuing a career as Keepers of the Vigil within the next six months.

A career as a hunter is not a pursuit that one assigns the self to lightly, so the assumption that you will step out of my classroom in six months time is not that you are competent in the subject matter that I will be teaching you, because to be 'competent' means that you will not pass this class. To be 'competent' means that you have meet the minimum requirement, and as a Hunter, the minimum will not do.

On your consoles, you have been provided copies of the series of videos called collectively by scholars as "The Luminous Apocrpha". These feeds were aired between the first of October and the thirtieth of November in the year 2012, with this [ pointing back to the screen now ] final video airing on the twenty-first of December soon-after followed by the period history books will refer to as "The Breaking of the Veil".

For the next thirty minutes, I would like each of you to go through one of the videos and write down any questions, thoughts or insights you might glean from them. At the end of the thirty minutes, I will open the floor for discussion.

Yes, you're going to play paintball tonight.

Once you're all ready (and Angela hustles you all like you're soldiers in the barracks, so it might be a bit harrowing for some of you), she's gathering you up to say: ]
