Over the course of the last week, you'll have likely noticed the buzz and excitement that's been building all around Metro Manila -- if you've been around awhile, you know what time of the year it is. If you're new: well, this is an experience you're sure to enjoy.

The festive mood surrounding Philippine Independence Day is hard to miss. Wander around the metropolis and you'll note that the streets are filled with tourists and locals; turn one corner and you'll see parades, turn another and you may be treated to performances set up on strategically placed stages.

As for Falner, the colors of the Philippine flag seem to be everywhere you look: the kids who live or study at the estate are mostly running around with their faces painted. If you wander down towards the Fair Grounds in the South District, there are a couple of booths set up offering anything from body paint and temporary tattoos to local delicacies. West District establishments The King's Rest and Liquidated also have special treats aligned with the theme of the day. There's also talk about the annual street party which will be held over at the Baywalk later this evening, and the younger initiates are abuzz over the yearly light show held over Manila Bay that showcase reenactments of all the major battles all the way up to the Darkest Vigil.

Independence Day is also not all that's being celebrated, because for Keepers of the Vigil and supernatural communities all over the world, today marks the second anniversary of Arcis Fortress City.

No joke: marriage has been the farthest thing from Hikaru's mind. They had an arrangement, and they were set on being together for as long as it took. That didn't need a ceremony, did it?

(Yes, it was the farthest from his mind because he's long written off the possibility of ever having something like that again. His grief over the first time he ever tried to marry someone has long since abated, but... well.) ]

I really don't think that's going to happen.

[ She is going to keep the smile from her lips by taking a puff from her pipe. Mitsuru, she cannot believe that she is actually going to think this: but it appears you have blind spots where your significant other is concerned.

Joshua LaRue is a small town boy whose parents married out of highschool. They are as painfully American as they can get ( and she means that in a good way. ) There is also the matter of the way he moves around you, blocking off a day in the week all to yourselves. He does not mind that you come visit him at the office, and that some of these visits turn into "dinner dates".

Does she need to go on about how the proverbial grapevine is abuzz at what a beautiful family you, him and the child seem to make? Were no one the wiser, if you were not the Wolf of Zangyaku and your face not so familiar to nearly all in Asia, the three of you could stroll down Metro Manila and look like a family.

This is, admittedly, where her interest in the child Lyall comes in. You already view her as a daughter, and if her assessment of Joshua LaRue holds -- and it will -- there is very little chance that the boy does not already view her the same way.

It is a regrettable thing that the child is damaged, but perhaps this is the blessing in disguise. The two of you are building a life, and you both function best when you can provide for another. ]

A shame, [ she does not really mean that, but you would not suspect that from her tone, ] I was contemplating how nice it might be if I could watch you exchange vows within my lifetime.

[ You will. It is only a matter of when, not if. There is a way she could confirm, but she prefers to watch things unfold in time. ]

Besides, I think your father would approve of him.

[ Yes, son, she went there. ]

[ She is going to allow herself to laugh now. A real one, where she has to set a hand over her stomach because her mirth comes from the very core of her.

You're going to get a kiss to the cheek not long after, and she lifts the long sleeve of her top to hide her smile. Her eyes are still smiling though. ]

Is a mother not allowed to dream? [ Teasing you now, in the language you both know best. ] Am I not supposed to tell you that should the opportunity arise, I actually approve of the man who will be tasked to take care of you?

[ Alright, alright. You look flustered enough.

Dropping the coy Whisperer act now and reaching out to lay her palm against your cheek. ]

He is good to you. [ It shows, in the way your eyes light up when you speak his name. ] And I am glad that you both have more time, circumstances leading to it aside.

[ And for all of the flailing, internal and otherwise, it is really, really good to see you laugh like that.

...Admittedly, it also makes him really really good to hear that you approve. Your opinion is something that matters to him a whole lot more than he can accurately express. ]

I am too, honestly.

[ Now that the messier issues have been dealt with, it honestly feel like a blessing. ]

It's... it's nice to have another constant person in my life.

[ It will always be something she will not take for granted, that she took a chance three years ago to speak with you, to lay down the groundwork to rebuild your relationship.

She'll make a big show of sighing, as if she is disappointed that she is being denied the chance to see you and Joshua LaRue settle down like the couple you clearly are. ]

Perhaps I will content myself with what is. [ A beat. ] You will keep me appraised on Lyall's progress?

Balamb Academy starts school on Monday.

[ Trying, naturally, to not look so sheepish. ]

Of course I will, although I have little doubt that you'll be able to keep track of her just fine without me.

[ You're not the Lady of the Night in Seigi and his mother for nothing. ]

[ Yes, she is. But it is not just the child that is her concern. It is also you. ]

It will be nice, nevertheless, to hear it from you.

[ That's said teasingly, in a tone that implies the phrase because this is as close to a grandchild as I might get. She does it though, in the hopes that helping you not dwell too heavily on the circumstances as they are, might lighten your heart. ]

[ Have a curl of fingers around your shoulder as your son moves in to kiss you on your cheek, Kasumi. ]
