OTHER NOTES: This is what happens when two mages with very hyperactive dragons meet XD

[It was a little lively, now, at the Great Hall as people began filing in for lunch. A good number were famiiar faces - Netsach hunters and other Keepers of the Vigil stationed at Falner, and students at Balamb Academy who were gearing up for another year. A large majority, though, were newcomers to the estate, and they were around to grab a quick meal before heading over for their interviews with the Kaiser.

Gray was here for pretty much the same reason, though in his case (and those of the other hunters who were initiated months ago) his interview was meant to check how he was settling in with his division.

It's early though, so he's not in any rush as he sat by himself at one table, enjoying his meal while his dragon was curled up nearby for his siesta.]

[ It's hard to find an empty table sometimes at the Great Hall; this is especially true during lunch hours. Which, you know, what noon is.

It's the exact reason why, when Rin spots a table with empty chairs, he just... grabs it. Sets his tray of food and a carton of milk on the table and takes a seat across the other person.

Madge, his dragon, hops down on the table and shakes her head at the young redhead. ]

You're so rude, Erin! You didn't say "excuse me" and "please!" [ Rin just shoots his dragon, black and red and over a foot long, a look. Madge ignores it in favor of turning to their companion on the table. ]

Hiiiiii! I'm Match and this is my Erin James, I'm sorry he's so rude, he's usually nicer than this! I hope you let us sit with you--

[ She then gasps at the sight of the other dragon, curled up just there, and crawls back, standing on her hind legs as she leans against Rin. ]

Erin, Erin, Erin, he has a dragon too! Look, look, look!!

[ Rin just looks apologetically at the other guy at the table. ] I am so sorry for Madge, she's an annoying little shit. [ Rin, being Rin, doesn't say anything about moving to another table. ]

[Gray's going to raise an eyebrow at Rin in mild surprise while his dragon - around the same size as Madge but sporting a more sinuous body covered in blue-green scales streaked with silver - wakes up with a start, rearing up his head sleepily as he mumbled. "Hm? Huh? Que? Is it time already?"]

No, Temo. Not yet. [He replies in a light Hispanic accent as he sets down his glass, before regarding the man seated across from him with a bemused look] Really? She doesn't sound annoying to me. [He glances, then, at Madge as he gives her a faint smile and a light nod] And sure, you two can sit here, if you want.

[Temo was just about to go back to sleep when he perked up at the sound of his partner talking to someone else on the table. When he glances over to see who it was, his eyes instantly go as wide as saucers once they registered not just another person, but another dragon, too.

"Oh.." he managed to say, before scrambling to his feet a moment later - now wide awake and very much attentive. "Oh!"]

[ Here's what Gray might notice: Rin is young, he's covered in freckles, and his hair is red, messy, and long enough to reach past his ears. And he somehow looks perpetually annoyed. ]

Trust me, she's annoying. [ Madge gives an indignant "Hey!" before dropping down on all fours, ruffling her wings. She elects to move tentatively closer to the other dragon. Because there's another dragon in the vicinity that didn't belong to a Fukuzawa. ]

So, what kind of mage are you? [ Because he knows Madge is curious, and he'd rather get that out of the way before she starts being a chatty thing again. ]

[He'll note all that on top of how he asked that question in a straightforward tone.]

Acanthus. [In the background, Temo was leaning towards Madge as he told her this. "I think your person has issues".] You?

[He's already got an idea of what this mage's Path could be, but he'll wait to hear it from him.]

Mastigos. [ He says that as he shoves a spoonful of potato salad in his mouth.

Madge, on the other hand, just shakes her head, laughing. ]

Naaaah, he's just hungry!

Oi. [ Linefacing. ]

["Really?" Temo asks in a skeptical tone as he glances, then, at Rin. "You sure about that? He looks more grumpy than hungry, right now. Or is he grumpy because he's hungry? Or maybe because he's Mastigos like he just said? Or maybe you guys are in kind of a-"]

Temo... [Gray chooses that moment to cut his dragon off, glancing pointedly at him with a raised eyebrow] You're babbling again.

["What? I'm just asking, amigo." His dragon as he stared back with a peeved look of his own. "You're a little curious about this guy, too, right?"]

Maybe, I am. But do you have to be so jumpy about it?

["Come on! This guy's new! Just like Segan is! And new people means new friends!" Temo emphasizes each sentence with quick motions of his wings.

Gray just sighs at that as he holds his unimpressed look for a few seconds, before turning to face Rin and Madge's way again.]

[ Rin just rolls his eyes and starts eating. ]

I've learned to just ignore the chatter. [ And everything else, for that matter, but hey. You don't have to know that. He's just going to focus on his food and let Madge talk someone else's ears off.

Which she's not currently doing, but instead, she's grinning at Temo. ]

So so so so so, is that your name? Temo? And thaaaaat one's.... Amigo! Nice to meet you Temo and Amigo!

[ Rin is mentally facepalming. ]

[... Que?

Gray's going to stare blankly at Madge as Temo gives her an enthusiastic nod.]

{Nice to meet you, too! Uh... What was your name, again? Match?}

Madge... [He corrects his dragon in a curt tone] And I think you meant Temo and Gray, there. Amigo is just Spanish for 'friend'.

{Si! What he said! So yeah, is Madge short for anything? My full name's actually Temeraire, but it's a bit of a mouthful. So people usually just call me Temo for short!}

Oh! I see! Temo and Gray! It's nice to meet you!

[ Madge is sitting up on the table near Rin's plate, swishing her tail back and forth. She's grinning wide, and Rin is just... calmly eating his food and ignoring the ongoing conversation. ]

Mmmmmm, I don't think so. It's just Match!

Madge, [ Rin corrects before he pokes through his milk carton with a straw and drinks. ] hard -dge. She can never get it right. [ And then he's back to eating. ]

Well, she might if you give her a while. [A short pause, there, as Gray takes a small bite from a roll of pandesal, before addressing Rin with a faint smile.] So... Erin, right? You a new arrival here at Falner?

[In the background, Temo briefly spreads his wings to shake away the last of his drowsiness, before settling back down where he was seated, glancing at their new amigos with great interest.]

If she's really the other half of my soul, then she's gonna be stubborn about it and not fucking learn at all. [ sigh.]

Just Rin is fine. And I'm not really new. Been here since... April? Yeah, around that time. Starting Balamb tomorrow.

[Huh. Starting at Balamb. Definitely an incoming student..]

Four years. [He replies as he's still studying the younger man from where he was seated.] This year's going to be my fifth here at the estate. Not to mention my first year on the job as a hunter.

Whoa.

Oh. My. GOSH!! Eriiiiiin, he's a hunter already! Ohmigosh that's. So. AWESOME!!!

[ Madge is now excitedly flapping around. Rin would roll his eyes at her but he's also a little starstruck. ]

Whoa, that's fucking amazing! What's it like? Is the whole hunter thing hard? What exactly do you do? Which conspiracy you in? [ He's got so many questions, he's not sorry. ]

[If Gray looks very surprised, right now, it's because he didn't expect both Madge and Rin to react that excitedly to him revealing that he's a hunter. Hence, he's raising one hand in a placating hand at the both of them to calm them down.]

Whoa, whoa! ¡Para! Stop! Slow down! [And he's actually chuckling to himself as he finds the whole situation funny, all the while glancing to see if anyone on the other tables was noticing them.] How about I give you a hint to guess which conspiracy I'm with, eh?

[As he say this (with Temo giggling in the background), he's slightly shaking the ring finger of his hand to indicate the heavy golden ring worn on it. It probably wouldn't seem much at a casual glance, but you'll probably know what that ring means if you give it a good look.]

[ To be fair, Madge is excited because it's Madge. Rin is just naturally curious and tends to ask all the questions at once, if given the opportunity. ]

Is that a Netsach ring? That means you're Netsach, right? Is the initiation hard? Do you, like, get beat up, or something during the whole thing? [ That last one is important because Rin does not like getting beat up. ]

[Setting his hand down, now, he couldn't help but grin at the younger man. He's Mastigos, alright. No doubt about it. He's taking a moment to clear his throat before replying:]

Yes, I'm with Netsach. 7th Circle Hunter at Ziz. I had my initiation two months ago with my blademates. [His grin widens a bit as he continues.] And honestly? It's not as hard as you probably think it is. Plus it doesn't involve any fighting.

{Yeah! Not like Zangyaku's. Because you have to fight the Blade King before you can join his conspiracy. But I'm guessing you're not interested in joining Zangyaku? Because you don't really look like you'd make a good oni-tsukai.}

[Temo nodded several times as he says all that, prompting an eye roll from Gray.]

[ Although, he's going to narrow his eyes at Temo because wow thanks for the vote of confidence. Just you wait, you puny little dragon, he's definitely getting in Zangyaku and every Compact and Conspiracy ever!!!!!

My Erin is gonna be an AWESOME hunter! He just doesn't look like it yet.

Which is why he's studying at Balamb.

[He's giving you a faint smile and a nod.]

Well, I do hope you get off to a good start when classes come tomorrow. [And at that:] What program did you sign up for, by the way?

Yeah, thanks! I'm fucking excited, actually. [ He's going to get his learning on, awyeah. ]

I didn't exactly sign up for it [ technically ] but I'm with the Special Cases Program! Would probably have liked the ASC, but that's six months of extensive shit, so I don't think I'd survive.

[While he's nodding to you again with a smile, Rin, Gray actually becomes more attentive with you. He's rather familiar with the criteria for Special Cases, and you telling him that you're one has him wondering, now.

Part of him wants to ask, but he'll settle for looking up your file later after he's finished with his interview at the Kaiser's office. So, for now:]

You probably wouldn't have. ASCs have a high dropout rate, after all. And I don't think you'd have even qualified to join the program to begin with. [A beat as he's reaching for his tablet.] Still, you've got an interesting year ahead of you. That's for sure.

[ He's actually okay about being asked, now. If you'd met a few months earlier, he might be snappier about it. ]

Yeah, definitely not qualified. I mean, fucking look at me, I'm all fragile skin and bone! [ Kind of true. He's also short. ] But still looking forward to the whole Hunter shit. I mean-- have you met the fucking Assassin of Zangyaku? And the Kaiser?? And Aidan-motherfucking-Clayce? [ Stars in his eyes, Gray. Stars in his eyes. ]

[It's official, Rin. You've just succeeded in pulling out a really big grin from him with all that. Especially since he could relate to what you're feeling]

Well, it's hard not to mistake Father Clayce for anything else, especially since he's a semi-permanent fixture at the lawn.

[Cue a snort from Temo:]

{They really could have put more on that sign.}

I haven't really had the chance to get well acquainted with Wiseman Fukuzawa, though. So, I only really have his reputation to go by.

[Said reputation being one of the Fifth World's strongest Banishers on top of being a highly skilled Celestial Master, and someone who many sought to train under.]

For obvious reasons, I've already met Kaiser Delacroix. She heads Netsach, not to mention I had to be interviewed by her before I could start at Balamb four years ago. [Which reminds me...] You've already gotten to speak with her, right? I'm actually going to head over to her office later, so...

Erin's been a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig fan of Mister Voidseeker Aidan Clayce for the loooooongest of times! He promised to come visit him on the lawn everymhrmph!!

[ Guess who just clamped Madge's mouth shut! Yep. Stop that, you embarrassing dragon you. ]

Yeah, I guess. [ Is he continuing as if Madge never started talking? Yyyyyep. ] It's just like. A huge fucking honor to meet the guy and his family. They've helped me a lot, getting here, y'know? Really awesome people.

And yeah, man, I've met the Kaiser. Talked to her this morning, even. She's just... Whoa. She's amazing. I kind of wish she'd be my mentor, but she's kinda real busy, running Netsach and shit.

I think I'm kinda in love with her. [ ...Can her telepathy reach this far though. ]

[He's trying hard not to laugh. Really. He is. But you're making it harder the more you talk, amigo.]

You might want to be a bit careful with what you say, Rin. She is a Mastigos Archmage, and she can probably hear what's on everyone else's mind if she wanted to.

[Especially since she could teleport every civilian in Falner to safety in one go if something bad were to happen. But he's quickly stamping down that thought. Amadeus' attack was something he tried not to think about even after three years.]

[ Oh holy motherfucking shit, he keeps forgetting that. ]

Well. At least she knows I like her. [ :| ]

What's not to like, seriously? She kind of single-handedly runs a conspiracy all by herself. Rest of the Malice Kings notwithstanding. [ That and she has the most gorgeou-wjifawjlksijlg right, she can read minds this far, gotta remember that to stop embarrassing himself further. But maybe she likes her ego being stroked?? ]

{So, I guess this means you're going to gun for Netsach as your first conspiracy after you graduate?}

Yeah, I guess? [ He'll turn to Temo, now. ] I mean, I think it's the best one to start with, before branching out.

Erin wants to join ALL! the conspiracies!

[ He ain't even gonna deny that. ]

Why not, right? I'm a mage, mages have a pretty long life span, so I got all the time in the world to join every compact and conspiracy ever. [ shrug ]

[When Madge blurts out your plan on joining every compact and conspiracy in the Vigil, that prompts Gray to shoot up one eyebrow in puzzlement. Temo, meanwhile, blinked a couple of times.]

{Really? Every compact and conspiracy? You sure about that? Don't get me wrong. I'm sure you'll be Hunter material after a year. Still not sure if you'll make the cut for Zangyaku. And mages like you and Gray will live a looong time. [Emphasizing that with a brief stretch of his wings.] But you do know that the other groups have their own requirements and restrictions, right? Right?}

[Give him a bit. He's going to say his piece soon.]

Uh, yeah? I'm not dumb, I know what I'm getting myself into.

Well, not all of it, but being here's kind of the fucking point. [ Rin shrugs. ] It's ambitious, sure, but it's not just that.

I've got literally hundreds of fucking years ahead of me, and that's a whole lot of knowledge waiting to be discovered and learned about. Each compact and conspiracy is gonna help me get the skills I need to discover and learn.

And my Erin is definitely going to do it! [ Madge looks so proud of him, too. ]

{Ah, well that clears things up for me.} [Temo happily remarks before glancing at his person.] {I guess Rin here will really be something if he pulls it off in the future}

Si [Facing you, again, now:] But yeah, Netsach is probably a good place for you to start out.

[He glances briefly at his tablet as he browsed through it.]

Which brings us back to your other questions. You wanted to know what I do as a Netsach op, right? Along with what a typical day on the job is like for a hunter?

My Erin is definitely going to reach his goals, you can count on that!

[ Here, Madge nuzzles her cheek on Rin's, affectionate and proud.

Rin gives Temo a smug grin before turning to Gray again. ]

Yeah! Like I said, I'd like to know. [ Biiiig grin. ]

Alright, then.

[Glancing briefly at his tablet as he let the primer for Netsach load.]

Well, for starters, being a hunter isn't that different from a regular job. Barring patrol and getting sent off on missions, operatives are usually doing work based on which divisions they're part of. Otherwise, they're off-duty, living their lives as normally as possible.

[Temo, meanwhile, is trotting over to a plate filled with a small assortment of fruits, dividing his attention between the conversation and debating whether to have a banana or grapes.]

Of course, the day-to-day routine of a given Keeper of the Vigil depends on his rank, and which compact or conspiracy he's a part of. Take Netsach, for example. It's Pax Deorum's standing army, and every member is expected to know how to defend himself in a fight, regardless of whether or not you're a part of Behemoth - the conspiracy's primary military force. That means setting aside hours each day doing training or research to keep your skills sharp.

Oh, okay. I think I read about that bit somewhere, but what do you do at Ziz? Isn't that like, a mythical bird? Does that mean you fly planes?

[ He might have some sort of ADHD, but he likes information. He will keep asking questions. And will read up some more, later. ]

[Temo actually snorts out a chortle as he was munching on one grape, though Gray ignored him as he shook his head.]

Si. The Ziz is a bird. A giant griffin, actually, in Jewish mythology. But no, that doesn't mean we fly planes.

[His dragon, in the meantime, is sliding the fruit platter a little closer to Madge, beaming at her as he asks:]

{Want some?}

[Easily ignoring that as he continues:]

We're actually Netsach's doctors and field medics. You've been to the hospital down at the West District, right? Ziz has its own building there.

Oh... [ He's slightly disappointed that you don't fly planes.

Madge, on the other hand, is enjoying a plate of fruit with Temeraire.

But hey! Doctors are cool. ]

I think I've passed by that hospital a few times. That the one with the statue of a girl in front?
